The Causeway and the Builders' Hut
The First Stone: how the causeway over the chasm grows
What it is about
At the rim of the chasm lies an unfinished causeway. You build from Emberwake, and from the other side someone hammers back. Every Ashfall adds life fathoms, and in the Builders' Hut you do one day's work per day: lay timber, ore and bars into the three compartments and the causeway grows. The kind of building material rises with every section. Every 100 fathoms the master builder on the other side sends a letter. In the first stage the causeway reaches the fourth pier.
How the causeway grows
| Source | Value |
|---|---|
| Life fathoms | 30 fathoms per Ashfall, at most 10 Ashfalls (300 fathoms) |
| Day's work | 50 fathoms, one day's work per game day; you lay it yourself — nothing is built at night or offline |
| Veteran players | on the first load after the update the Ashfalls already behind you count up to fall 5: 150 fathoms in all, nothing is taken away |
| Limit of the first stage | 400 fathoms, four sections of 100 fathoms each (the fourth pier); there the causeway ends for now, and the day's work only lays what is missing up to the pier |
Whoever lays a day's work every day stands at the fourth pier after 8 days; the life fathoms from Ashfalls shorten the way. A missed day costs nothing.
The Ashfall preview tells how many life fathoms the Ashfall adds, as long as the causeway is still growing.
Building materials per section
A day's work asks for three compartments: 40 timber, 40 ore and 5 bars. They come from bag, Ash Vault and mailbox; there is no new raw material, everything is something you mine and smith anyway. The kind rises with every section.
| Section | Fathoms | Timber | Ore | Bars |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0–99 | |||
| 2 | 100–199 | |||
| 3 | 200–299 | |||
| 4 | 300–399 |
The world map
The map shows the causeway by fathoms and moves it on, picture by picture (they are the map pictures that already existed). The chasm tells how far the causeway reaches, and a button there leads straight to the Builders' Hut.

Letters from across
Every 100 fathoms Grev, the master builder on the other side, writes a letter; in the first stage there are four. The letters are kept in the Builders' Hut, the newest on top, and the journal notes when one has arrived.
| Letter | |
|---|---|
| Letter 1 at 100 fathoms | I hear someone hammering. That is good. For years I have hammered alone. — Grev |
| Letter 2 at 200 fathoms | I no longer count the stones, only the days on which you lay none. There are not many. Thank you for that. — Grev |
| Letter 3 at 300 fathoms | The third pier stands. From here I see smoke over your roofs. I thought there was nothing left there that could burn. — Grev |
| Letter 4 at 400 fathoms | I do not have the timber for the rest. I need something that lasts. Do not wait for me. But come back. — Grev |
Achievements
Three new achievements belong to the causeway. They exist in the game only; they do not count for the Completer and are not in the Steam backend.
